Among backpackers and nomads, the Lonely Planet guidebooks have become the defacto bible. These guide books are packed with intricate details and advice for travelling in specific countries. There is a guidebook for just about every country in the world – including Afghanistan. This article looks at what makes them so great and why you shouldn’t leave home without one.

The entire reason I began travelling was due to reading my friend’s Lonely Planet Thailand book back in 2003. Since then, I try to pick one up before every trip I go on. They are written by a small team of authors, who are usually expats in the country in question. Lonely Planet guidebooks are extremely well written and cover everything a traveller could possibly want to know about a country.
